How about instead of Good = a flat +5 karma points, and Bad = a flat -5, it could work something like this:

the Karma db table ->
level_one points necessary to be level one
level_one_weight amount of points awarded/subtracted when user has ...

I'm not really into the topic icons. I like a more minimal design, and these add extra images and clutter (unless you have a practical use for them, which I don't).

Will topic icons be an optional thing that you can turn off?
