I've been playing with the Sandodo's Paypal IPN group subscription 1.0.4 mod (which BTW is no-where near EM friendly)
One of the table names is perfectly valid when manually entered in phpAdmin but EM returns an invalid table name error on the last page. Before that it seems to be just fine with it ...

Nod... What I've found helpful is to comment the search string in the instal file and then copy the commented line into the target file in the location where it should go. This also serves to refresh my ever more volitile memory when I'm trying to figure out "WTF happened here?!" later.

the first of many mis-steps I made when I started playing with phpBB, is hacking the default template.
Make a copy and go through the small amount of work required to change the name references in the template files. Hack the copy, not the original.

Some errors are more important than others.
If you have a library of styles including styles that aren't closely based on SubSilver, you will get errors installing any mod that writes to the template files... The question then is, do you really need that style or can you find the portion of the code ...
