There never was a release date and i think there will no one until the gold version is released.

Were the permission set right?

The group of the registered users must have the permission to edit the username. It will not work if you allow it only in ACP -> Board Config -> Board Features.

Don't believe there would be 10069 forums on phpbb.com. Seems to be normal even if the forum does not exist

Well, at least they opened up the phpBB3 Modifications and Styles forum now!! it must be close!!

Users and Groups -> Manage Groups -> Members-Link in the row of the group name

After the descriptions of Group members :: Group Name there is the link "» Make default group for every member"
