Is there some function in Olympus where if the user didn't activate their account via email (if this is set, of course) with X number of days, the unactivated username is deleted from the database? or will this have to be a mod?

Actually it's not re-written from the base up.
Only such parts as permissions, CAPTCHA, admin system, user stuff, etc is rewritten...
I would be surprised if you'd find more than a few hundred lines (Olympus has more than 100,000 lines) that remained from the 2.0 line.
