do not underestimate the psychological unwillingness to change, let alone the technical troublesome of converting/integrating forum software with something else. :)

RSS has alot of uses. Unless everything about your community is about chatting, then there's no need for RSS. But not everything in some community is about chatting.

Easier said than done, and not to under-appreciate the efforts put into this project, but the fact that (1) it takes 4-5 years to roll out one version and (2) 2.2 = 3.0 , together mean that some reorganization in developing phpBB must be considered for phpBB to be competitive.
