phpBB 2.2 already provides easier and better integration with CMS. If you would check the code and the MySQL scheme you would see it is already being developed with a portal in mind (phpBB portal) ;-).

I really wouldn't recommend that. This will cause a strain to the database which is even unnecessary.
There's always the highly customisable search as well as the "view your posts" feature. That's what I always use if I don't want to log in ;-).
Imagine having 200 logged in users and 3000 ...
