Security Suggestion: Autoban Spammers

Post by Shining Arcanine »

I thought of this a while back for a vB, I super mod, that was being porn spammed by some jerk... Anyway, I think it would be a good idea if everytime someone posted, phpBB would check to see if their post is identical to their two previous ones. If they are, it should autoban them, delete the posts, and then send an email to the administrator with the identical posts and the user name of the person just incase they are innocent. Excluding anouncements which won't be an issue in phpBB 2.2, I can not see a legimate reason to make the same post 3 times in a row...

Each post is now stored with a corresponding MD5 hash in 2.2. So it should be very easy to implent a function to looks if the new post is the same than the one before and e.g. will need moderator approval before it is shown. I recall seeing a feature request on the tracker, who knows if it found its way into the top secret roadmap. :)

Yeah but what if a thread is like:
Posted by John Doe on June 3, 2003 at 10:52 am:

Does your program include features to tweak the SQL database?

Posted by stargazer on June 3, 2003 at 10:52 am:

Yes. :)

Yes. :)

The two posts that said: "Yes. :)" would be considered spam in that case.
I don't like the idea of it. :o

They shouldn't be considered spam but could go into the moderating queue. And adding a time-limit between posts should keep the problem you describe at a minimum.

But careful, we are close at feature request territory here. :)

It sounds like a good idea...

but how could you make it so it would tell the difference?
