And I would like to mention that, even if it was designed for gamers, doesn't mean we can't take advantage of it for other needs. The Laravel community, for example, has a Discord server too.

This is something I wanted or ment to bring up for discussion in krakow. While I do not care what we go with, I do feel that we need to really look at transitioning to something else like slack or discord. If for nothing else than like you mentioned both are far more development friendly than irc.

The open source argument to me is quite moot IMHO it should not be a determining factor compared to easy of use and community interaction which are both fare easier in all the other options

Okay I think both services provide pretty much the same except for Discord is for free while Slack isn't if you want to use search and don't want to force users to register. Slack is free for nonprofit with less than 250 members (difficult to influence), otherwise it's 85% discount: https://get.slack.help/hc/en-us/articles/204368833
All in all, it looks much simpler to embrace Discord, imho.

In my experience, it absolutely was easier and provided a better experience for everyone. If you want to have a look at some other development communities on Discord, here are a few recommendations that I personally visit.

Godot - open source game engine
https://discord.gg/uZ2xdBD

Discord API - a community of hackers that build various things with the Discord API
https://discord.gg/discord-api

Hero of Allacrost - an open source game project (this is the small server/community that I manage)
https://discord.gg/M3wR2py

ok just a test I put together something together
https://discord.gg/y6kjMdA

this would mean that we would have to sync our phpbb usernames with discords however from what i can tell

ok, so I replicated most of the functionality we use on IRC pretty simple to do really. @Marc github merges is really pretty easy just needs a hook created on the repo. the GitHub hook in discord webhooks. Still pretty new too and figuring out things so if anyone is smarter or knows something I am overlooking in testing let me know.

Not sure as to where this problem lies, or if it is something that can be dealt with.

When a user registers on the phpBB Discord server some bit of magic picks up the user's avatar from the phpBB board. However if that avatar is subsequently changed then the change is not being applied to Discord.
