what about word ban. i mean not word censoring

Post by snakeput »

excuse my low english . im very low educated almost illiteracy.

if someone write specific word. can't post it.

i mean not word replace censoring. if specific word just can't post it.

word ban is very powerful, easy anti spam method.

most spammer write same word into their spam posts.

so if phpbb be equipping word banning(not stupid word censoring) that can prevent many spamm posts. that is easy fashion and not requiring third party anti spam mod.

i tested phpbb 3.1.xx but that version don't have word banning method too.

i really hope phpbb 3.1.xx get specific word can't post anti spam method.

This is the first request I've seen for something like this. While it probably wouldn't be too difficult to implement, I'd say it should probably just be left for an extension author to do, rather than being a core feature.

If you add akismet (not the best rbl) then you should add multiple blacklists, like ABM, but he's not talking about RBL blocks.

He's talking about banning words so the members can't even submit a post with said words inside. It's still not the best idea because it could often block legitimate conversations too:

"I got paint on my *shoes* today at work." "I won 1000 *dollars* at the *casino* playing *poker*." "I need to run to the *pharmacy*." etc...

Most spam words can be used in real conversation too.

-1 for me on the word ban but +1 on the ABM blacklists. ;)
These kids today...
Buy them books, send them to school and what do they do?

We wont add it, but add events, so that people can implement it ;)

Good idea, add events so people can ban words *and* put the blacklists in the core. I wish I had thought of that... :D

Or... you can stop the spammers from registering in the first place. If your in teh business of catching new spammers that akismet or stopforumspam etc hasn't listed yet, thats a whole 'nother deal.

You definitely can't stop them all, before registration, even with RBLs...but they help a lot. I just think a word ban is the wrong way to go about it. :D

Exactly, and I even suggested that content filtering use a plug-in method (like CAPTCHAs) so that phpBB could include a simple one, like blocking based on censored words.

I agree, and I suggested that in the post linked to above as part of a multi-layered spam blocking system (blacklists, CAPTCHAs and content filtering). We already support two non-configurable blacklists, so why not make it configurable?

That's certainly true, but you would probably do two things.
  1. Make the word list exclude words that might reasonably be talked about on the site. For example, most sites probably wouldn't need mention of Viagra, Levitra or porn.
  2. Have a permission added that controlled whether content filtering applied to the user. Once you have that, you could only have it apply to the Newly Registered Users group (or, if you used Auto Groups, any group with a certain number of posts or longevity ;)).
Even if somebody did use a word that was not allowed, I would hope that a content filtering plug-in API would allow returning an error message, and, for a word blocker, that error message could include a list of words used in the post that were blocked. That would allow the user to edit their post appropriately instead of trying to guess what words were "bad".

All of my forums have a general/off topic/lounge kind of forum so virtually anything could be mentioned in those, including "viagra" and the word "porn." I don't even censor typical spam words. I suppose *if* the word ban/censor *only* applied to NRU group that might be OK but I'd rather stop them from posting links (than words), as I proposed in another RFC. ;)
