[RFC]Spell Checker

Postby Methen » Mon Aug 15, 2011 3:43 am

I would like to prepose to have a built in spell checker to be added yes I know mozilla has one but not everyone uses mozilla
and this has been requested several times as a mod on the other board.

Most of the decent WYSIWYG editors out there have a spellchecker built in and there already is an RFC for that. not sure there would be much reason after that to have a separate spellchecker if theirs does this already.

Sorry but in my opinion the Browser Spell checker is fine. If the Peoples wish a spell checker, they can just Switch to Firefox :)
Chrome has a spell checker also if im not mistaken. As the most popular Browsers are this two. It would be too much of a fuss to add a spell checker to phpbb.

In my opinion spell checking belongs into the browser.

...not to mention that a spell check would have be maintained in every single language. Plus: what about multilingual boards? No, spell checking must either be done by the browser or a book (oldschool).

Yep, every browser except IE has a spellchecker (iirc)

As far as I know, only IE is outdated enough not to include spell checking (imagine that). As such, it makes no sense to have two different dictionaries (one for phpBB, one for the browser) trying to spell check the words, as well as the added server load required to constantly check each word. Maybe this would have been a good idea before browsers started to include this on their own, but at this point, I don't see the need.

if you absolutely need spell checking and you're stuck with IE, I suggest you switch over to MS Word (or similar), type up your post, and then copy/paste it back into the editor.
