A new feature to overcome spam and flood

Postby Bakson » Wed Oct 05, 2011 9:43 pm

I am an active user of a Forum based on phpBB.
This Forum like many others much suffers from spam and flood.
I see the way how this problem can be solved effectively: how we can combine two incompatible objectives - to overcome spam and flood with preservation of absolute freedom.
With your help, certainly.
The missing feature in phpBB looks as follows:
1)Author of any Topic can mark any post in “his” Topic as spam/flood. (More exactly, not the Author, but the person authorized by admin, but it seems to be generally preferable to convey this right to the Author).
2)Moderator can mark any Topic in his forum as spam/flood.
3)The marked records are not deleted but filtered. By default a user of the forum does not see them. But he or she can click a button “show all” to see all records. - Different users have different interests, so everyone has right to choose if he or she would confide to this filtering.

How about like how News channels block replies,
give posts a ranking, let admin choose from what rank the post will be collapsed and visible with a "show" link to expand.

a default rank of -3 will collapse item.

It is better if there is Robots which can detect and clean the junk/ spam.
the robots can be set: Auto/ Semi Auto
can delete just the junk or also with the user

You just basically described Soft Delete, which I think is being developed for 3.1 or 3.2 already. I'm not sure if the topic author will have soft delete permissions only in his topic, though.
I do custom MODs. PM for a quote!

That's not a part of the patch as it currently exists.

1)ANSWER to "naim ": I don't exactly know how "News channels block replies", but it seems to be something like it. More generally, my idea can be used not only against spam and flood but also about off-top. It often happens that somebody asks a good question, some people give good answers, but in between other people use this topic to discuss some related questions, so the discussion drifts away... They may write wise and interesting things, but if you want to find real answers to the topic question, it's not easy to find them. So this feature could be used to filter real answers from all the other stuff. And it can be really some levels, let's say: Real Answers, Off-Top, Spam. There might be other levels and uses. And let everybody find what he or she needs.
2)ANSWER to "other users": My idea has nothing to do with Robots and Soft. Its point - "to preserve freedom": not to clean, but to single out more precious info in long topics.

This is a nice feature for a MOD.
Request it as a MOD. This in the core? Bad idea.

Hello,
IMO something like a recycle bin for delete posts would be a better solution. This could be used for other features, too.

BTW: IMO the aim should be to prevent spam and not to manage spam.
