Fix Simley's White border

Postby Dragosvr92 » Sun Jan 22, 2012 9:09 am

phpbb3 smileys have some type of white border around them. Always wondered why wasnt that part also made transparent, like the other background area. In prosilver/subsilver or just white styles you cant notice the white border at all, but its seen on darker styles....

I think it wouldnt be hard to start making those white borders transparent also :)

As long as smilies are GIF images, it can't be done. In GIF format pixels can be ether opaque or transparent, they cannot be semi transparent.

Changing to PNG format is not really an option because many smilies are animated. PNG images cannot be animated. Changing only non animated images to PNG feels more like a hack because animated smilies will still have white edges.

Yahoo's smileys are still gifs with a perfect transparent background.

It is possible to gifs to be transparent:

I know it is.the current smileys are already using a transparent background, its just that it has those borders there.. they can easily be removed in GIMP or Photoshop etc :)

They have ugly rough edges, phpBB smilies have nice smooth edges.

Arty, what are you talking about mate, you are staring to confuse me alot. :|
Here is some fast example I've made....... The existing Simleys are already transparent. its just that that border has to be removed.

The first smiley is the original one. the Second is modified a bit, and the last one has all white areas removed.

white backgrounds, first looks best, black bgs, last looks best.

Imo, the second is best overall:
