join phpBB4 development

Postby webdev » Thu Sep 01, 2011 12:41 pm

I've heard that phpBB4 is developed with symfony2.

I work as a software developer for a company that uses symfony2 for all new applications.

Since myself use phpbb and manage multiple forums, i would be very pleased to join phpBB4 development.

Unfortunately I have no experience in open source developer teams, especially as the development cycle (and organization) looks at such projects.

Sorry for offtopic, but whom can I ask if I have questions about that.

Hello!

At the moment, phpBB4 is a very long way away. I don't believe that development has even started, but the repo is here: https://github.com/phpbb/phpbb

We use Git for collaboration and version control - learn how to use Git here and read more on the phpBB wiki: http://wiki.phpbb.com/Working_with_Git

Thanks callumacrae,

I'm familiar with Git. I've had a look in the repository, but there is nothing but the file system.

How will I know when to start and who is there to say that?

You are in the right place already.

This forum should be used for discussing everything pertaining to phpbb 4.0.

You can watch the phpbb 4.0 repository (the one called phpbb) on github or subscribe to this forum.

and who is there to say that?

People in green, generally.

Rewriting a piece of software as extensive as phpbb is no small feat, and at this time development team is concentrating on delivering phpbb 3.1 and maintaining phpbb 3.0. Do you have any reasons for avoiding phpbb 3.x other than that it is not written with symfony?

As said above, I manage a variety of forums. In each of these forums we use 7-10 mods.

It cost a huge amount of time, to the migrate mods into a new version of phpbb. 1-2 weeks later updates are released for these mods and everything starts all over again.

When I heard about the plans for phpBB4 (including here), I just thought: 'hey cool, that's my thing, I'll join you! ".

Anyway, let's say I want to participate here. What is the process? read ticket + rfc + discussion, fork repository, make my changes, pull these changes, send pull request and hope that my interpretation of the rfc is correct?

My questions relate mainly to process and organization (that's why I said offtopic).

For straightforward changes you can do that. Otherwise it may be a good idea to propose your implementation in the RFC topic and wait for comments before writing it.

For mod installation in particular the development team is planning on delivering an installer for editless modifications only (done via hooks) - see viewtopic.php?p=220497.
