How do I place an image on the portal welcome page?

I have tried searching around but can't find what im looking for. I would like to place a largeish picture in the center of the portal but I'm unsure how to go about it. I can semi-understand the php coding and can use FTP.

Where do I start? Should I modify the code for the portal to include an image or is there an add-on that could do this for me?

I think it depends on what portal you are using. What you could try is use the image bbcode to put the image in there. If that doesn't work, then you will need to edit the appropriate html code to put the image where you want it.
