Capacity

Post by N1ckL21 »

I've been using phpBB for years and I love it. I'm currently in the works of a new website which will be a forum as well. This time I plan on it being quite a bit bigger than my previous sites. My brother who makes a living off websites has recently told me that phpBB can't handle large amounts of traffic at one time. Is this true, and if so, will it be true for phpBB 3.0?

I would say this is more down to the server then the software and the database settings, a shared hosting package can only allow so many connections at once, a dedicated server can handle more

I have seen some phpbb2 forums handle a lot of people, but again its down to the server

A list of the biggest phpBB forums on the net

If it couldn't handle a lot of traffic, I doubt they'd exist.

Wow, well that changes my mind entirely, thanks for clearing that up. I have one more question now, if i install the most current beta version of 3.0, will i be able to upgrade when the final version comes out, or do you advise me to wait? Thanks.

We don't know yet if there will be a beta>RC1/gold upgrade available.
But if there is they've said that upgrades from the beta will not be supported.

So you can go ahead and install phpBB2 (as you will be able to convert it to phpBB3 when the time comes) or just wait for RC1 or gold to come out. RC1 looks to be very close.

I believe phpBB3 has been deigned to easily handle millions of posts better than phpBB2 if installed in the same server.

Server speed is a big issue, but BB3 is definitely engineered with million post forums in mind

Billion? Well, GaiaOnline is very close to 1 Billion messages, so you'd have to ask them.

Basically, it takes a lot of money, time, and skills.
