Several phpbb2 templates have had it for a while.

Templates? Wouldn't you need more than a template (i.e., a mod) to get this functionality on phpBB2?

It might be associated with having the extreme styles MOD too but the morpheus templates certainly have it.

That's probably it. I think the role of the template doesn't go much further than coming with versions of the images with dots (or whatever other marker they use) as standard. A mod is required to have the page refer to the marked versions of the images when appropriate.
