New Karma System (Theory)

karma systems are as lame as it gets, i hope the developers prefer to work on the 432544 features that are more important than this. just my 10 dollars.

Thread Karma Weight
: I don't quite get what this would be used for, but I assume it works like the User and Post Karma weights...

Again, the more Weight, the more relevant the thread would be.

This is the one I don't quite get - the more relevant to *what*?

Ok Imagine, that you are doing a search for “Fluffy Bunnies” By default the current search engine look just at the most recent posts containing “Fluffy Bunnies”. If there is an older historical thread, and it has a high weigh value, then that thread would be moved near the top “Fluffy Bunnies” because people would have marked it as a high relevance. Not imagining if you had two threads, both the same with the same rating, the one with the most weight would probably you best chance to find what you are looking for. I hope that makes sense.

And with the karma system you could mark that post as irrelevant to the thread. In addition, the user may loose status for unconstructive posts, but that would be determined by more then one user.

Thank you. I don't intend to write an essay on why I think rating users as GOOD or BAD is lame.

I hadn't realised that Karma could be linked into the search system in that way - now it all makes a lot more sense - although I suspect that the search part will be one of the most complicated parts... you'd want to make sure you didn't move a thread up if it had high weight, but the only matches were in low weighted posts...

To DragonlordP... if you're not interested in Karma, that's fine. I don't want the Devs to spend time on this at the moment either. However, there is a chance that it might be included in a future version (or so I've heard), and there's no harm in us discussing our theoretical concepts for how it could work. It might even save the Devs some time in the future...
To be honest, your post reminds me of the guy who signed up to a usenet newsgroup, then replied to every single thread saying "I'm not interested in that, please don't tell me any more" - I hope you can see why that was silly (I'm not implying you're that bad, just using an extreme example to make a point)

Well - my post was neither irrelevant nor uncostructive. This is obviously something heading to the devs and it will require some of their time to think and to discuss how and if they shoul try this way, and all I wanted to say is that from my 4 or 5 year experience in forums with and without karma systems, I think that it's a stupid feature not worth so much time and discussion. You obviously think it's worth it, so go ahead and continue talking about it. I only made an one-line post with my comment and that would be it if I wan't attacked for having a different opinion. My point is that I would prefer the devs working on anything else than that and I just said it. I didn't want to take it off-topic and start a conversation about "why do you think that phpbb needs something like that?" and blah blah blah, it would be useless. You have your opinions - I have mine. Excuse me for stating it.

There needs to be no reasoning. If you think rating users is lame then that's just about it. If you prefer the devs to work on something else instead, there you go, you've got a fully understandable and self explenatory preferance. Hi there,

I'm a newbie to the forum here. I think a rating system is an interesting feature for a forum to have, but I can understand why it's difficult to implement it properly, as designed and no side effect. So I understand why people are not much interested in having the feature right now.

Nonetheless, the theory of rating system is interesting in its own right. If we could come up with one worth implementing, I feel it could take phpbb to a newer dimension.

I like the whole idea, but why not do something simple like slashdot has? Users get points by reviewing reviews, and then get to use those points to review peoples posts.

Example:
I have one point from reviewing peoples reviews.
I go to a new thread and like what User A said, I then spend my one point to rate him one a scale of 1-5 based on that post.

User B logs in and is asked to review a few random reviews.
User B gets to see the thread I was looking at and the user I rated, but does not get to see my user name.

User B then rates my review as Fair or Unfair, which then gets calculated into how often i get points to rate people with.
