I don't know if you are serious so I am not going to get too worked up about it, but people need to undertand the difference between a "development board" and a "production board"... amny do not.

I think you miss the point. The n00b who understands CVS development branches isn't the type of n00b who will mistake a snapshot for a release. Even if the developers were to rethink snapshots, it's not about limiting access but about avoiding confusion.

A lot, not most.
Right. That's what I said. :)
JPortal wrote:It's annoying, but whatever. It takes all of what, 5 minutes to tell someone that CVS code is unsupported?
But whatever? I think it's a little more involved than that. End users get frustrated, and at times we have to explain why a zero support policy exists in the first place, as you know from your own "why" question.

There has to be a better way. Yet when we suggest that area51 users (a phpBB development site, not a general purpose phpBB site) ought to read the forum descriptions, that comes across as asking too much. It takes all of what, 30 seconds to read a forum description? Like I said before, we all make mistakes; that's not a problem. But certainly we all, as a community, could work together better toward a common goal.

I never said you were asking too much (although others may have, I'm not speaking for everyone).

I just have a few thoughts.
  • Non-moderator community members need to stop being such jerks to people who UNKNOWINGLY break the rules
  • New users need to stop being so thin-skinned
  • To disable snapshots just because some n00bs are breaking rules (again, unknowingly) is going WAY too far

They are only "unknowingly" breaking the rules because they do not want to know the rules. They appear in RED when composing a message and when viewing the forums. I do not see how one can still stand behind this idiocy. Basic rules. That is what this comes down to, and yes, new and old users should be aware of them before they post. THe problem is that people post their problems without taking any effort to read the rules. THe reactions their posts cause should be expected.

Have you stopped to think that those "reactions" are as much of a problem as the people asking for support themselves? We are deliberately more lenient on things here because the team like to have a bit of fun as well. But if we were to enforce the same rules as the main site, Sam and I would be handing out warnings all over the place.

Perhaps people should adopt the approach of ignoring support and bug posts and leaving it to the team to deal with if they need to - that way the stuff we don't want could just drop to the bottom of the forum unanswered.

And to those who say "it only take 5 minutes", bare in mind that those 5 minutes still add up and take team members away from doing other tasks.

Yeah, maybe we should just ignore all 'bug reports' and support requests but I guess that won't stop them anyway.

I agree it is so incredibly silly for someone to ignore the forum rules when they are right there at the top of every page. Perhaps the "Don't discuss new features, report bugs, ask for support, etc." needs to be in red...

or God forbid! BLINK!

I think the developers are more excited to get the first beta released than any of you will ever be. Why? Because once they've realeased the beta, all the nagging and whining, and complaining, and insulting about how long the project is taking....................will rapidly decrease, givcing their (the deveolpers) just a little breather to take in some life-giving oxygen. ;)
Think that the developers have secretly stopped working on PhpBB v2.2? Think again........see the latest progress HERE:

Anyways if you look at the current snapshot you will see one of the developers hopefully solved the problem of n00bs downloading the CVS then asking for help with it.

this is just a thought (i only just registered here, i been watching the board for a few months now though) why not add certain words to the blocked word list? Look at all the posts people have made asking for support, and replace those words with something stupid like "Fudge".

example.
just wondering if any one has fudge and is fudge phpbb 2.2 because when I post it says that its not there or it doesn't show up, has any one else had this fudge?
Not only would people not post, but it would provide some light entertainment for the developers while they are hard at work?

Sorry im tired, this seems funny to me
