I'm testing out using divs for table replacements, they work very well with cleaner coding than tables but I haven't really done the cross browser testing yet. Tables are easier to setup though I'll tell you that much :P

Tables will suffice for the most part here; most of the stuff is tabular data.

This template goes some of the way to doing away with tables, but you can go further without too many problems. The issue is to know your target audience and thus what will work
Viewforum.php etc are all big tables and should be marked up as such.

Viewtopic.php on the other hand...

I know some individuals hate table building, but being a copy and paste html tag wizard it's not that bad IMO.

Not using tables at all in phpBB wouldn't be the right answer. The main page is tabular data, period. Rows and columns. The topic pages, however, are not tabular. Creating a tableless template for showing topics and their posts would be an improvement in the overall size and speed at which the pages load. Tables load slow because they won't show until all data in the table is retrieved. A tableless design for showing topics/posts would be an improvement over the current display methods.

Check out http://forums.tolkienonline.com for a pure tableless version of phpbb.

It is possible. We did it.
