MariaDB WILL replace MySQL in future.
MySQL will be less and less free, thanks to oracle...

Google is already making the switch to MariaDB. Check out this article, "Google Waves Goodbye To MySQL In Favor Of MariaDB" (published September 14, 2013).

This is going off-topic (The topic being MariaDB support for phpBB). Essentially, phpBB does already support MariaDB so the only thing we could do is add it to a list of supported database systems unless anyone can point out a way that we can do something to improve MariaDB Support?

Is it worth adding this for 3.0.x as well? I'm intending on testing it out and seeing it it will work at all.

There is nothing to add, and we couldn't change anything, even if we wanted to as php just has a mysqli driver which works fine for MariaDB.

Good catch I suppose we could at lease make a note in the installer and documentation about it.

Considering that this Travis-CI ticket has not been implemented within the last 6 months, I have gone ahead and implemented MariaDB support for Travis-CI in our repository. See https://github.com/phpbb/phpbb3/pull/1780/files

We will add MariaDB to the documentation files of 3.0.13. See http://tracker.phpbb.com/browse/PHPBB3-11920
