For you developers... What about the Private Message?

Currently it is totally verbose, i.e.: (3 New Messages, 2 Unread Messages)

Is it OK to drop all that stuff and just do: Private Messages (3)

I wouldn't want it to look like this craziness: Private Messages (3 New Messages, 2 Unread Messages)

Update: This is what I have come up with so far, using the more verbose method:

Though the pic above seems a little lengthy... Wouldn't it be better to not have distinction between new pms and unread pms ? I'd still prefer the original sample pic showing like: Private Messages (5)

I am against this idea. "Private Messages (3, 5)" makes no sense and having to explain this in a mouse-over is to much work for this. As for the first suggestion, I am not an native English speaker, but I would assume that it is grammatically incorrect plus "news" has a total different meaning. Personally I would go with "Private Messages (3)" and completely drop "Unread X". Or if it can not be dropped move the "unread X" into a mouse-over.

I still dont understand why phpbb displays 2 different counts. On other BB or social networks, it only shows number of unread PMs

How would it show private messages only with one display. Incoming font-color to blue and unread to font-color red.

For me it doesn't make sense to use colors. I agree with @Kamahl19. Showing only number of unread messages is enought and doesn't make sense to split it to new and unread messages.

BTW, I will also move "View your posts" somewhere else or remove it from header.

I would personally be fine with dropping the distinction between new and unread, and just show the number of unread. But I'd like a second opinion from another developer.
