contact page 3.1.x and 3.2.x

Post by Stoker »

Hello,

First I would like to say that I appreciate and respect the work you guys put into dev of phpBB.
Next I have to say that the contact page seems like a bad joke.
There is no way to protect if from spammers. I have boards with no spam posts at all, very well protected.
But the contact page gives spammers a free and easy way to spam me with their crap.

It just doesnt make any sense to me that something as good as phpBB in general, has something as poor as the contact page.
Would it take much effort to do this better?

Sorry about being grumpy ;)

Well, part of the purposes of the contact page is for users to be able to contact the board admin if they have trouble registering, which can be the result of not being able to solve the captcha. When that same captcha is being used at the contact page, the user can't contact the board admin.

IIRC, there was quite some discussion about it in the RFC topic. I suggest you read that topic for more background.
Above message may contain errors in grammar, spelling or wrongly chosen words. This is because I'm not a native speaker. My apologies in advance.

Then the solution would be to make captcha optional.
Having a board where several spam mail is sent on a daily basis from guests is bad.
Right now the only solution is to disable the contact page.

I tend to agree. Seems it was simply tossed into memberlist.php without having any ability for extension authors to make an extension to add whatever to stop the spam generated by bots using the contact us page.

Not a very elegant solution in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that there probably should be some sort of anti-spam measure added, but there's no event in the contact us page because nobody has sent in an event request for it as far as I can see.

I dont think this should be done by an ext. It should be in the phpbb package.

Yes, but because the majority can't seem to come to a consensus about what to do about it then an extension would have to do the work since such a change would not make it into the core until 3.3 now anyways since 3.1 and 3.2 are both feature frozen.

Spam is the spice of life. But you can turn off the contact us page if it's more problem than benefit to you, for now.
Has an irascible disposition.

Since you are getting spammed all the ways then a potential good tester for an idea of mine, could you please tell us from which timezone the spammers come from?
thanks in advance.
