I'm a computer science & english major. Don't attempt to school me on context. Your not that coolt_backoff wrote:Um, it's a board regarding phpBB development - what did you expect?mykkal wrote:you guys are so technical that is obvious nobody here is an expert.
If you want a kitchen sink, I hear vB and IPB include them. Just because we don't do what every other software does does not mean we are falling behind or don't care about our users. By the way, I would suggest you look up the word travesty - you are so far off base.mykkal wrote:It is an absolute travesty that phpbb doesn't resize images. The excuses given for not doing what every other bulletin board software & CMS software already does do not remotely make sense.
TRAVESTY -

Long gone are the DOS days when curiosity led the average person to learn how to re-engineer technology totally foreign to them. These days tech is more basic and standard. There are basic expectations for every category of applications. As such people usually don't resize images these days. The most heavily used sites & software in commercial application these days do it for us. Example: Flickr, instagram, twitter, photobucket, facebook, vbulletin, wordpress, etc... Many of these softwares also allow for editing of images and cropping. If we were to talk about resources that is something much more intensive than resizing animated images. Internet technologies (hardware & software) are exponentially stronger and more efficient than when phpbb was younger... My own phone has more memory and processing power than the racked server I had eight years ago. Amazingly these software applications (mostly scripts) aren't crashing from the multitudes of users utilizing as some this thread have suggested. So whats up with the technical paranoia? They have hundreds of millions of users and they work fine.
Also, and as I mentioned before, there is the culture of people today. Mobile apps, and other technologies have made many things such as remembering phone numbers things of the past. Just as the average person no longer has basic HTML skill (since the death of myspace). I haven't even memorized my own phone number since we mobilized contact lists and cell phones became "landlines". The web has matured in the same way. In that respect phpbb is caught in a self-defeating time warp. Look outside your box.
Software that doesn't meet community standards is definitely far behind. The reasons given for not integrating this function have no technical base. If they did I wouldn't have said a thing. Of course if we consider phpbb to be a 'starter drug' for forums and if we're not really concerned with it having the ability to compete with other open source software...then your on the correct path. I said something because i'm concerned.
If phpbb wants to move forward and be a 'better' board then it will need to begin to pay attention to some core details. Some functions should be created as mods. Others, like this one, have no business being left to the community when they should be core functions.
I know phpbb can tell the difference. I would do it myself but running three businesses and having retainers I have no time to do it....however were phpbb to make it a 'priority' for future versions i'm sure someone would.
As for suggesting other boards...thats actually offensive. What i'm reading is that you want praise for the features we all like but want to tell your community to kick rocks when we consistently ask for a feature that we've deemed a 'need'. Thats how social community's fail. Pay attention to your demographic base. We aren't stupid.
Lastly, I believe the entire internet has a responsibility to support free and advanced ways of syndicating information. If phpbb really wants to build communities the average person can use to disseminate & digest information...I think it should begin an internal culture change. Simple services like Twitter and MediaWiki are getting it right. They have enough detail under the hood that average citizens have communicated and built self contained communities globally. Your neighbor can compete with large media networks that once controlled the flow of information. phpbb has the ability to do that on the forum side if they really want. But this culture of deciding what is best over the communities demands has to stop. It violates every rule of progression that is civilized. No business or society can do such things without eventual implosion.
