Built-In CS Mod

Postby uuiiuu » Fri May 11, 2012 7:36 pm

CS Mod= forums in small groups that allows the creation of tens of forums without overload the page..
like here:
fxp.co.il

theres allready a mod for that for phpbb 3.0.x and i think it should be built in for the next version for those who want to create a big forum community on all the subjects.

hope you will take my proposal :)

phpBB Permissions go into meltdown after about 2000 forums so I doubt this would work in practice.

i didnt say 2000, no one creates that many forum O.O
i ment like 50-100 forums for a serious community, and not one that talks about one subject
it would be great for some people, for some it may not be useful, but it is steal an important feature...

phpBB can cope with 50 - 100 forums fine (although the top end might be pushing it a bit).

Why is that? Is that some memory or CPU issue or something?

For every user for every forum for every permission, there is a row in the database. Every time the index page is loaded, it has to work through the permissions for the forums for the currently active user. That table can get massively big if you have a lot of users.

iirc

This is really a style feature rather than a MOD, and IMO should not be included in the core. A wall of links is not an inviting default interface for most boards.

Maybe this is off-topic, a mod should better split this?

Anyway: if I understand you correctly, the number of rows is the result of the number of forums multiplied with the number of users, right? In that case, the number of users should be as much a limiter as the number of forums would be. Looking at the big boards, 500.000 members isn't a problem, even with dozens of forums. That should result in millions of rows, yet the site is still pretty fast.

false, just have a search on .com. Every once in a while someone comes around that wants to create a board which discusses every possible subject under the sun.
