http status codes 404/403 ???
I think they would look nicer with the normal header and footer, but if others agree to make it use just the simple ones, fine. :)

This could be an extension but it wont hurt to have it by default. It makes the experience more cohesive, plus there are cases where I think phpBB should handle those requests like a deleted attachment.
Sorry for my bad english, still improving.

There is a MOD for it, but its old and would be pretty to be included and supported by phpbb.
Right, if the attachments are deleted from the server, phpbb will dump a error message, not the server.

I find it somewhat embarrassing when SMF even has it. We're sort of obligated to one-up SMF when possible, because as a whole, phpbb is superior (at least in my opinion)

If they want such thing, use an extension (and alter the .htaccess) for that same purpose.

Not everyone knows how. Forcing them to learn is cruel.

oops, forgot to include an error link:
SMF:
http://www.simplemachines.org/shiegri
Wordpress (which includes bbpress)
http://en.wordpress.com/tupacwoohoo
VBulletin also lacks this feature, and if we included, we would have yet another thing to hold over their heads.
Phpbb is not alone, guys. . .

SMF doesn't seem to have that by default. They've set up their main site to provide a formatted 404 page with some basic info, as do other large sites/companies. Here is a rather large site with SMF that is not the actual SMF site:
http://forum.burek.com/fakepage

We even have one on phpBB.com:
http://www.phpbb.com/fakepage

As for WP it seems like they may provide such a feature, which is not surprising as they provide content management capabilities. It should also be mentioned that a custom 404 page cannot be automatically set up for a server and would require the admin to be able to change it either through their site control panel or through .htaccess files, which is not always the case.

very well, but we should at LEAST publish a guide sort of thing, I still feel that lacking this feature makes installations seem vastly primitive, and anyways, shouldn't the main site represent what it gives?

Why? It's a forum, not an entire website, though some sites only have a forum. On my site, I run custom error pages which are designed to fit into my site's style. I know I wouldn't appreciate it if my forum threw some other kind of error pages that I'd have to track down and change and maintain.

That is a 404 page for their website, not their forum software.

That said, having a 404 page with a search box in it I would approve of.

Note: .com 404 page has a search link which is substantially inferior, in my opinion.

phpBB.com? Well yes, there's a search link in the breadcrumbs and the 404's main content, but there's also a search box on the top right in the header, as is consistent with the rest of the site.
