I just don't know about how performance is important but... Strings are slower to compare than integers, that's a fact.

Can't you just log all taken numbers in the dbal and make an automod feature picking the next one?

Hello Mii,
there should be table with auto increment ids. And add_log, view_log and the ACP log modules just have to look for these ids. Maybe a good idea???!!! It would be a tiny but very usefull table.
