Smilies and UI Graphics as Sprites

Hello,
Is is possible to make all of phpBB's UI icon graphics come from just few (2 or 3) sprites, to decrease the number of HTTP requests made (and thereby speed up pages)?

If you enter "sprites" into the search box on the top right you find [RFC] CSS Image Sprites

Sorry, I did only search in "[3.1/Ascraeus] Discussion" using search bar near "NEWTOPIC" button, where I got no result...Thank you for the remark
