update question

Post by jlsclarity »

The latest available version is phpBB 2.0.23.You are running phpBB 2.0.17.

The above message is what it says at the bottom of my admin section. From what I am reading there is a much newer version than what this indicates. Can anyone tell me why there is a difference? Thanks in advance!

2.0.23 is the latest in the 2.0.x line. I'm guessing you're referring to 3.0.4 which is the latest of the 3.0.x line. You can upgrade your board to 3.0.x if you would like, but what it shows is correct for the version you are using.

Thank you! So i dont have to update to a 3.0 version? How do I do the update that they suggest for me? What benefits would I have by updating to 3.0? If i do update will it erase all other posts? Thanks a lot for your response!

phpBB2 is no longer in support, so an update to phpBB 3.0.4 is recommended.
What benefits would I have by updating to 3.0?
There are dozens of new features, it has an enhanced security framework, and it is still supported :)
If i do update will it erase all other posts?
Your data will be preserved through the upgrade.

Documentation on how to do an update is included in the /docs/ directory of the phpBB3 download package, available via Ohloh.net

You will need the Full Package. To upgrade, you do the following:
  1. Install phpBB3 to its own directory
  2. Go back to the installer and click the Convert tab
  3. Fill in the information about your old board
  4. Delete the "install" folder
  5. Rename the old and new board folders if necessary
More detailed instructions can be found in /docs/install.html included in your download.

Wait before you upgrade.

Are you using any CMS such as phpnuke, Nuke Evo, Raven nuke, etc?

if so, Upgrading to 3.0.x is not recommended until they make a port for it so it will use the same theme as your CMS site.
