Hide Reply and New button to visitors

Post by Dakin Quelia » Mon Sep 28, 2009 9:56 pm

Hello everybody,

I have a suggestion for feature.

I tested on phpBB version 3.0.5 (without MODs) the permissions and the permissions per forums don't allow to hide to visitors the Reply or New button. It will need it. :)

See you soon,

I don't understand why you would need a permission to hide these two things. If you don't want them to reply or make a new topic, set the permission to read-only?

When a user is logged, he doesn't see the buttons. Why a guest can see these buttons? Okay, guests don't can reply or create a topic. But it's not logical in my mind. ;)

The permission is on "Read Only" yet. ;)

When a user is logged-in, his permissions are known, so if he cannot reply, there is no point in showing him the Reply button.

However, sometimes users are accidentally logged-out, or do not bother to log-in. In this case, it can be frustrating to be looking for a button that is normally there, but has somehow vanished.

Yes, that's the exact reason why it is how it is. :)

That may be "the reason" however the OP is correct the behavior is inconsistent with the same permissions behavior for other users/groups. When a user is not logged in their permissions are also known, they are controlled by the permissions assigned either the user Anonymous or the group Guests. It is completely illogical to display buttons to one group and yet not another when their posting permissions are the same. If the admin has allowed guest posting the buttons should be displayed but if Guests have read only permission then the buttons should be hidden, just like they would be for any other group or user with read only permission.

@Dakin Quelia, you are 100% correct but they will never admit it. ;)

It's not logical... and not a good reason. Sorry. ;)
