Components by the phpBB team for phpBB 3.2?

Post by yexusbeliever »

After I was reading some blog articles in the phpBB.com, I begin to think. Wouldn't it be wonderful if this addition is given free to the whole phpBB community? Why YES!

phpBB3 is a total free software. The bulletin board software don't have to be bloated at all. phpBB3 can be a package of its own.

My request is to allow phpBB3 fitted with components. Components should be like large mods with automatic installation script. I guess you can imagine it as an extension being put on the core product. Can this be made possible?

So what components we see on phpBB.com that users may want? Here's a possible list:
1. Knowledge Base
2. Blog
3. Bug Tracker
4. Download Section

These components may not have to be just the ones developed by phpBB team for phpBB.com only. They can be third party extensions or component such like arcade, calendar, photo gallery, etc.

When phpBB.com has to update to the lastest version it have to make sure all these listed above components must meet the core files' compatability. Therefore by packaging some components for us users won't possibly be too much work, right?

I am confident by saying that adding components exactly the same on phpBB.com as optional, we as the product users will be found happy!

I would much rather the phpBB developers invest their time in working on the script than these asides. The parts of phpBB.com are all so intertwined releasing them would nearly be impossible, and they're certainly not going to be recoded just so the public can have them ;)

As an aside, the blog is actually Wordpress.

Well that can hardly be classified as a "shocker", but luckily for yexusbeliever, wordpress can be easily integrated with phpBB.

Ah, you're right. It's powered by wordpress.

I really like to use wordpress along with phpbb3 too. How can that be done? I don't think it's easily integrable. I research at wordpress and at phpbb.com. The only successful mod made for integration of phpBB3 and Wordpress is inactive. If you can successfully me and others how to integrate WP and phpBB, many people will be happy.

We tried community coding projects back in 2005. IIRC it did not get much attention...

On the note of the blog, it's not actually integrated. We have separate user accounts on the blog, and there's a plugin that copies our user colours.

this is completely off topic, of course, but please let me say some words:
the "community coding projects" were conducted in a mode which maybe sat well with the people who lead phpbb at the time, but is not very compatible with the open-source mode of work:
-- the teams themselves were secret: there was no public information listing which teams exist, what each team's project is, and who the team members are.
-- of course, considering the first point, the actual ideas and designs, not to mention the code repositories of these projects were completely hidden from the community (if any existed at all).

as a result, those teams and projects, once conceived, were completely disconnected from the community. if a team member of any of those projects got tired or busy, there was no way to fill her place. the community at large could not contribute ideas, critique or help to any of those projects. the community was not even informed which teams and projects exist!

this may be a reasonable more of operation for a company, or even a startup, but it's very unusual mode of operation for open-source projects.
i was not surprised that those projects were not successful.
i don't think it's fair to conclude from that failure that the community can't help. however, phpbb seems less open than other open-source project to community contribution.

FOOTNOTE:
btw, this include credit: in the not-so-common cases that the team does pick a piece of code provided by a community member (i can say this, because here and there some pieces of phpbb were contributed by me), they usually do not attribute it, or mention the member in any way, not even in the code repo.
personally, i don't mind that much, but i think that if a project wants to get contributions from the community, there should be an established way to give credit, even if only at the code repository (and preferably in a more visible place also).

Whenever I go checkout the mods at vBulletin, their mod stuff is filled up and rolling. They have better and more mods than phpBB3. And their mods are usually free to the community, though the script itself is a paid one.

Concerning a way to build prosperous community projects, I think phpBB may have to attract serious php mod writers.

Back to the Wordpress, I guess there will be no mod to join the two software together then. wp-united is dead and no one is able to take it up.

So we come down to these listed components on the first post, I'm guessing again that there will be no further attention towards this movement?
