In phpBB 2 link to topic looked just like this:
mysite.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=123
now it's:
mysite.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=123
but old style also works.
What's the difference? Why does it form link in new style if old one works too?

The mirror never sees itself.
The reflection never is itself.

Re: New style links
Yes, but the question is, why have the f= in the URL in the first place, then?
I think it has something to do with differing styles per forum, and maybe also with global announcements (that do not belong to a single forum, but can be reached through any forum).

Hmm... interesting thought, I have liked the fact that it is there, but I have not been sure why... I should test it.

Re: New style links
If &f= is not there, the small "Who is Online" box at the bottom switches to all users online, not just those in this particular forum.
Re: New style links
One reason is that the forum parameter is required for global topics to be displayed correctly.

Can it not be omitted for regular threads, and the forum ID gathered from data out of the topics table in that case (so you can do the "users browsing this forum" feature)?

Wasn't there something about using the correct forum style on global topics?
