This karma theory is interesting and has bothered me for a while now. OK, I have one or two simple ideas that might help slowing down or even preventing (to a certain degree) the abuse of a karma system.

However, I'd like to know if there are people interested in turning the ideas we have brainstormed so far into a mod or a feature. Smile

I read it and I think it's a great start. The devs may tweak it of cource but the most complicated part of that idea to me was the math and he's already written the equations.

There is interest, keep it coming. Smile There are some future developments that might affect this.

From the idea I now have of that system is that it will require a lot of data to store and a lot to calculate for an optional feature. (I'm not saying it's bad just seeing it a bit pesimisticly)
We could use some things phpBB3 already has (like reporting posts or friend/foe).
I'd agree with dhn that there should only be a way to recognise posts/users in a positive way. This would eliminate the possibility of bashing someone but it wouldn't stop users from pushing eachothers karma. This could be partialy solved by limiting the amount of post/user recognitions to some value. It wouldn't stop people from pushing eachother up but it would slow them down.
I said something about using things already built in into phpBB. The friend/foe is a really simple idea - karma rises/falls the more peple recognise you as a friend/foe. This would be difficult to abuse. You'd have to get a group of peple that would bash someone or "help" eachother. Post reporting would be used as a way a user could lose some carma but only if a mod would claim that the report is true. Locking a topic would also be a reason to lose some karma. A mod would decide if it is needed and who is responsible for the topic being locked.
It would take about3 values per user (if you don't want to track who and how many times a user recognised another user) as the rest would be stored by the other features.
This may not be a very percise system but it would be simple to implement.
It relies heavily on mods so if you have the wron staff the system will fail miserably Razz .
Don't give me my freedom out of pity!

Granted 2.2 was renamed to 3.0, but take a look at these apples Wink

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16230&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=15

and now look closely at this regarding Karma and phpBB3:

So how do you like those apples? Smile

** I am not sure what all to make of it yet and just what the real 3.0 feature list is actually going to be, but it seems interesting and a little perplexing at the same time; only time will tell... **

If someone is able top write a proper system prior to the release of 3.0 it will be in, if not, it will be in 3.2. There are already a lot of good ideas here, so it would be sad to not give the community a chance and use them. Smile

I'm guessing you can feel free to interprate Paul's comment as meaning 'There will be no phpBB developer team coded Karma system in 2.2' Razz

So then... Would any of the people from this thread actually be interested in getting together, and making it actually happen? If so, I'll volounteer my coding skills to you (assuming I'm wanted, of course Razz)

Actually it was out and only returned when we started planning for the community project a few weeks ago. This was one of the projects that was discussed the most - even after it was scrapped - by the community, so we figured, what the heck, give them a shot. Wink

Each member of the team has to have decent coding abilities, as mentioned int the announcement, this is no training project. If you feel you are up for it, apply. Smile

I think that it maybe a good idea that integrating phpBB with some social networks software or site, such as friendster.com etc.

So apply individually to do it? I don't think I would be able to do the required ammount of work alone in the potential timespan required (for Karma, at least), adn as such, I guess it would need to be team based? Should teams be applying together?

Thanks.
