Rank according to sex?

Post by Johnny »

On my board we use royal and military ranks. But it's a bit "stupid" :) that a female is called Emperor, not Emperess. Will this be possible in Olympus? I guess not, but then would this be something that will be easy/difficult to mod?

No, not without a Mod. That feature is obviously quite specific and to be honest I can't see it being relevant to any version of phpBB at this time.

Sex information about a member 'd be a great feature according to me !
But all that is important is that the new version of phpbb includes a real system of MOD installation. That 'd be the most important new feature !
A great base, like phpbb id already, including a great MOD install... !

Gender is something very important for the gramatcal correctness in some languageas.

Most (European) languages can correctly refer to females using the masculine form of whatever word it happens to be, though it would be thought of as quite formal.

For example, in English, one can say "No user may delete this post, no matter his status" quite correctly, though using 'their' has come into fashion as it is gender-neutral.

Besides, in order to implement this, the entire language abstraction system would have to be reconsidered - how will the language file know in advance whether to use the masculine or feminine word?

Storing gender is quite simple using a custom profile field - see your profile here for an example of this being done.

However, as per Paul, I can't see something like this being a feature of Olympus.
"So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish"

thank you for your replies

i agree with those of you that said that there are issues with the board when you translate it to other languages, but that's not what i was wondering about.

what i thought of was something like Graham said, about a custom field and that that field controls the name variation of the rank. i assumed originally that this wouldnt be possible with the vanilla install, but was just wondering if this would be something that would be difficult to mod?

it's not really a big deal, but you don't call a female royal person a king, and the other way around

This in response to APTX and yazerty ... read what is written, not what you think is written.

IMHO, if the devs say what they think again and again, it's better for users to stop thinking and saying what they think. Lots of people using phpBB have different needs. MODs are a way of meeting those special needs. And if you can't find a MOD that meets your needs, then try and write one or forget about it. If you aren't satisified with the devs' explanations you can always fork phpBB and call it what you like. Remember you don't pay anything to use this or any other Open Source software.
