Concerning Bots and Karma

Post by bestweb »

Hello, when I was looking at the legend for online users, there was listed Bots. What are these bots and what do they do?

And what is the Karma?????

I believe Karma is a rating other users can give user. Say if they flame or just aren't helpful you can recieve a negative karma level, a positive or green karma level is from someone who helps others out and are rated postive.

And if I didn't make much sense:

The more "good" reviews someone gets the more positive their karma will be. And vice versa for "bad" reviews.

So, if used wisely it should be possible (for example) to better represent someone who may only have posted a few dozens times but whose posts have been very useful ... from those who've posted a few thousand times but where their posts consist of "Yeah, I agree" or "ROFL", etc. :)

In time the intention is to allow karma to be used in the event system (assuming we implement it ).

Of course, like anything it could be abused ... although you have complete control over just who can rate posts in a forum.

Bots are search engine spiders. Googlebot, Alexa and MSNbot. The install sets up a couple for you but you can add as many as you like and then you can see when the bots are spidering your forum :)

Okay not really related at all but the combination of questions in the first post sparked this thought.

How do bots treat karma? Do they get default user karma settings, or do they view all by default? Would be an interesting way to control how bots index things IMO, not perfect but it would stop them trying to index the very worst posts :)
Images in sigs! please.

Ok, well, that Karma idea is really good. Do you know what the event system is that was mentioned in the first reply? And also, do you know where I can get the search engine spiders?

Ummm, you don't "get" seach spiders. They are programs from the search engines that visit your site and see if it's worthwhile to index.

Bots don't care.
They (the nice ones anyways) hit robots.txt, see what they can hit, and go indexing. The bigger ones (Gogglebot, etc.) start caching, and all that fun stuff too.

Thats true, but unless your the page is worthwhile it will be ranked about 900-gajillion and then the search spider visiting your site is really nothing to get excited over.

However, the only way (for example, Googlebot) determines page rank, is by referenced links.

Ever heard of Google bombing?
Yeah, the search engine when indexing doesn't give a damn about rank.
Google ranks a site based off how many links it gets, that's all. It doesn't decide anything otherwise.

Ever heard of getting banned from Google?

I know how it works, thanks for the description though... If you stopped to think about it, Googles algorithm works incredibly well, and without going into details, all high ranking sites are worthwhile unless they are "Google bombing" in which case they will be banned soon. People link to decent sites, that gives PR to the decent site and it's rank increases
