I'm totally confused by this...
I've read as much as I can about Jabber...
Why is it so exciting? Is it just a feild in the profile like MSN messenger that says your jabber address?
Will you need a jabber client? To send IM? Or is there some way of integrating a web-based jabber client into Phpbb?
Is this going to replace prillian?

Re: Jabber support
Jabber is an open protocol for IM. Instead of using AIM, Yahoo, etc, you can set up your own server. This is useful for companies that like IM's speed and flexibility, but don't want employees on the major IM networks. It's also handy for clubs and other organizations, and for those that have issues with the major networks.
You can never go home again... but I guess you can shop there.
Re: Jabber support
Going to show my ignorance here but going to ask anyhow.
On setting up one's own server doesn't that get pricy and time consuming for a small to medium website?
We current use Prillian, which we enjoy. But there are features we would very much like to have that are not on Prillian, such as complete conversations and not having to remember what was said last.
I don't understand why if Prillian works within phpBB why all else I see requires altering usr paths and such, meaning you have to own the server.
OK, more than enough potential embarassment there! 8O

Re: Jabber support
I know. There are general purpose public Jabber servers available.
But now you bring in the security risks associated with IM's in general. On server is much more secure.
Probably will go that route since my understanding is Jabber is more secure and private than most.
But contained on one server under on script is more secure, you have to admit.
Re: Jabber support
ok could someone explain to me how jabber works with phpBB ? I mean, what is it supposed to do once you enter the correct jabber settings in the phpBB3 admin cp ?

A: if set correctly, you should be able to communicate through the board with jabber.
