You'll also see it in the UCP (of course that's if its enabled) ... there will be no indication of how close you are to increasing or decreasing your karma, that would partly defeat the point.

We're actually discussing now exactly how to define the karma calculation itself ... and it's likely that weightings will be definable by the board admin. So even knowing what leads to increased/decreased karma may give you no indication.

So currently it is just positive or negative.

Well, or neutral. :)

In the old discussion about this I actually preferred a more content like approach, like giving posts a Slashdot-like rating (funny, troll, interesting). But I like the simplicity of this system here a lot and I don't think more is needed.

This feature being worked on is one of the features that makes me so happy about 2.2 :D Finally, a way to 'rate' users other then their posts counts. :)

I'm just wondering what you'd actually want to display in the UCP, just the karma, or percentages good/bad or what?

I think that the formula you were discussing yesterday is probably a fairly simple one to go with, unless you want to start throwing in the karma of the person who rates the post into the calculation.

Only trouble is, that it can be a bit annoying to rate a post when you haven't read them all - a bit time consuming. Perhaps, if the link launched a new window, instead of redirecting the main window (at the user's personal descretion, of course)?

And as for calculating the Karma, there are many things that your might want to take into consideration. For example, how long the rater has been at the board, what rank the rater has (as in Admin, Super Mod, etc...), and as Graham said, the rater's own Karma...

Can admins view how someone rated a post without delving into the database? Some people might not be very happy knowing that this sort of info can be easily viewed.

That could be done in the template, just by adding some JavaScript and changing the functionality of the link. It wouldn't be that hard.
fun, sigs work!!!

Knowing the track record of keeping the users privacy as good as possible by the developers, my guess is a big: NO. :)
