How do you deal with install directory during development?

A forum with install directory is unusable by normal users, thus one can't have the install directory present in their local forum. Yet it is part of the source tree. How do you deal with this situation?

Well you need it to install the forum and once that is done you delete it.
It is simple not sure where you are going with this

Enable the DEBUG constant(s) in config.php. It will then ignore that install is present.

I created http://wiki.phpbb.com/Getting_Started. I can't edit the main page and I'm not sure which page to link to Getting Started from other than the main page.

I have added it to the sidebar and unprotected the Main Page, which could use a general overhaul anyway
