Have you the same problem?
1. Write and send a PM with an attachment zip-file.
2. The attachment ist stored in the "../files" folder - please look at this.
3. Delete the PM.
On my server (../files )the atachment exists further

I know this feature, but have not found the uploaded attachment in "Orphaned attachments".
I tried this after your message repeatedly
... and I have send the PM...because...

Probably the user you sent the file to hasn't deleted the PM, so the attachment is still available to him/her, therefore it's not orphaned and is still in use.
