When to switch

Post by trancelove69 »

Hi,

I'm trying to judge wether it is worthwhile to port a heavily modified 2.x board
over to 3.x and at what point of time.

Shoot me if i'm wrong or preposterous but 3.0 seems to be more of an internal rewrite
than a release that adds a significant number of substantial new features in terms
of user visible improvements (wysiwyg/ajax/dhtml). I can of course appreciate
the beauty of a clean code base, but i need to be economical about investing
time in porting.

Am I wrong in deciding against moving to 3.0? Is there a comprehensive feature
list vs. 2.x somewhere?

The left column is improved stuff, the right column is added.

Any hunches on when to make a switch? Obviously first stable stable release would be a possibility.

Once I make the switch I wont be able to use the upgrade paths, since the board will be modified
again, so automatic upgrades will be impossible.

And given that most of you have followed the dev process here, when is a realistic date range for
the release of the first stable version? Three, six or twelve months from now?

Thanks

You will be able to update from RC1 to RC2 etc to gold so that won't be an issue.

You can go live with it now. RC1 is stable in the sense that it's being supported and, as a forum, it works just fine. You're using it now!

There's no sense of when gold will be out. The betas had gaps of a couple of weeks to 6 months. It just depends how it's going.

Hi there. It is now Jun 2007, can anyone advise if "Olympus" is ready as I'm keen to switch over from 2.0.x?

IT is in the RC stages and fully supported. As you probably know that means it is not a final release but stable enough to use live, although it might still have a few bugs which need ironing out. A lot of people have already upgraded and are using it live :)
