Kinda new here but Why would they suport Beta to RC1? for the few that have gone live with there site after being told not to over and over again.
It realy makes no sence to me.
They are going to be buisy enouph with the upgrades from 2 to 3.
So for all the brave sole's that did go live then you should bear this in mind. At least ther well be a skipt for a update. worce comes to worce "Start retyping".

As for Beta -6 I realy dont se a call for it they seem to be taking care of the new bugs that are coming in at a good pace now and as long as the dont add another
style in the mix then they should have it nocked out soon enouph.
When you look back the betas have come out every 2 months or so and thats with out adding any thing major in the mix. So when you take the fact that they
did add a new style and have got the bugs as low as they have my hats off to them and all my praces to the coders.

I do some coding of my own and have taken a look at the code and ther is a lot to it. More then most would beleave. I to like the rest of you am waitting for the
RC1 to come out so that Not only can I go live with it but so that I may complete my bridge work I have started on it and can get some help with some mods. It is
one of the most complex set of codes that I have played with. And I real think that eery one well be quite happy with the finnal out come.

So in the end ((Suggestion to developers Keep up the hard work you are doing a good job ))

There will be an update path from Beta 5/6/whatever to RC1. But these versions running live with beta and updated to RC/Final will not be supported.

And why having a full supported Beta, but not the RC? Where is the difference if there will be RC1, which will be full supported to a full supported Beta 6? You just call it Beta 6 instead of RC1. The support would be the same. But there will be only support for RC, I don't think there will ever be support for a Beta.

So, I would, of course, more like a RC, but if the developers think a Beta would be better...then there should be another Beta.

The Beta was never fully supported. The only reason it was supported at all was so the devs would learn of new bugs or problems that would happen from people who just do things differently than they do. As in, there may be 15 different ways to do 1 thing, but maybe they only use and have tested 5 of those 15 ways to do it. With a bunch of other people using it everything will be tested much, much more. ;)

Also, they are not supporting older than RC installs because of converter/updater bugs. With RC1 the converter and upgrader are much more stable and do things correct (unlike most of the time when they first were released). So they will basically be having everyone start with a clean slate.

Why they are making a B5 -> RC1 upgrader is beyond me though. If I wanted to go with a clean slate for every one I wouldn't make a B5 to RC updater (though the enthusiasts like myself would still make an unofficial upgrader for our own boards, like we did with B1 and B2).

the updater itself is a piece of code/logic, and it's not realistic to expect it to be 100% clean without testing.
the only way to test it, though, is to use it by upgrading one version to the next.
if there's no beta-6, the upgrader will be severely undertested, so the least that should be done is to allow beta-5=>rc1 upgrades, as a way to use and clean the upgrader.
of course, imo, it will be better to make it go through its paces twice: once in the beta-5=>beta-6 upgrade, and again in the beta-6=>rc1.

The updater is under tested? My phpBB2 -> Beta5 went pretty smooth. There were only two issues that I found with it, and they've been fixed. I haven't seen any new bugs for the converter in a while.

Which facts? The amount of time it's taken to develop phpBB3? What? Holy crap, I had no idea how long it's taken! I'm sure I speak for everyone here, including the developers, when I say THANK YOU for pointing that out. We were so busy patting each other on the back that we missed it. You're right, pointing this out was very much needed. Now the developers can go back in time and get this done faster, and release it three years ago.

What would we do without you, TwistedWeather? You've saved phpBB!
Hopefully the developers here wont take it as a attack and delete my reply because that WILL show they really do have no intrest in getting this thing out the door fully.

No, deleting your post wouldn't show that at all. It would show that they have lost patience for unhelpful complaining. And your post IS an attack, even if it is a well-meaning attack.

Expected reply as someone else mentioned.

I appreciate the sarcasim! You feel better?

You have a nice way of trying to spin things. Oh and mind telling the rest of us when you became a developer here? :?

How about you tell us what you think is a reasonable amount of time to update software such as this? I guess you would be happy if everyone just said to hell with it and went elsewhere? I am sure that is what the developers here want. If for one second you dont think that is gonna happen think again. Perhaps it would help if you got out and around a little more and see what is going on elsewhere. Yeah phpbb isnt the only game in town anymore. I for one dont wanna see it go anywhere either but i suspect if things arent picked up around here this will eventually happen. And so yeah my comments are well warrented and hopefully the developers are wise enough not take them as you did. You dont like them too bad as they really dont pertain to you anyways.

Maybe you will go somewhere! Will it be a loss to the phpBB project, nope! Will it be a loss to the users waiting for the system, nope!

On the otherhand there are those of us here that have been using phpBB for many years and are quite content to wait until a final stable product is released so that we may upgrade our boards. For us our current boards are running more than fine, and while we look forward to the many improvements, the delay is not impacting on our existing boards.

If you can not wait to create a new board, either do it in phpBB2 2.x and upgrade later, or start it in something else. simple.

If all you want to do is whinge and whine like a petulant child, there are other forums better suited to your style!

ok, I for the first time just downloaded a cvs of phpbb3 and noticed the the current version as of 4/12/07 was 3.0.B6-dev that kinda tells me (with very limited knowledge of how it works) that there is a beta6 on the way. Am I correct in this assumption that this is how they number them or does that not have anything to do with it.

No, they always have the next stepwise version number with -dev at the end. The decision on whether that changes to 3.0.B6 or 3.0.RC1 comes when it's actually released. Up till then it's just a working version number.

That's the converter, not the updater.

Converter does BB2 to BB3
Updater did beta3>beta4 and beta4>beta5

Sorry, English is not my native language, so I was missunderstood.

There was the suggestion to release a fully supported Beta 6. And I just wanted to know what the difference would be if somebody calls the next release Beta 6 instead of Release Candidate 1, if there will be full support. Never wanted to say there was ever a fully supported Beta.
