Avatars from external URL

Post by Nicholas the Italian »

Guys, can you please try on your beta5 boards to upload or link your avatar from an external URL, and tell me whether it works or gives you an error? Try for example with http://eric.extremeboredom.net/images/f ... tar-40.jpg or images/avatars/upload/41471_coniglio8080.jpg . Thanks.
If it works, I must have messed up something, but have no idea of what.
In other words, it works well here on Area51 but not in my test boards.

(BTW, from ACP > Board settings try disabling the board writing something in the text box, and tell me where it is meant to show. Thank you again.)

Both avatars work perfect on our board, which is Beta5.

EDIT: OH... you have to be logged out to see the text OR be a non-founder/admin
If the board is disabled, and you load up the forum, it will show in a trigger_error there with the text for the reason.

Thanks both.
Let's move to a more difficult question then.
Why do I get "Avatar could not be uploaded" or "Accessing the image was impossible or file isn’t a valid image" when trying to upload/link the image?
Note that the URL does exist and the image is valid, in fact if I download and upload it from local it works.

PS: sorry, just tested with phpBB2 and saw upload doesn't work there either (linking does). So it can be a host-related issue? (Upload may be blocked by folder permissions, but why does it work from local then, and what about linking...)

I recently changed the message to be more clear... this can happen if your host does not allow the usage of getimagesize() or the usage of getimagesize for external urls.

Got it, thanks.
Making an abstract discussion, wouldn't it be possible to:
1) copy the image from the external source;
2) check image size locally;
3) accept it if it's ok, or refuse and delete it giving an error message otherwise?
(This applies to upload, linking... well, let go)
Maybe this would be a problem if someone tries to upload a 10MB image?
