every major component of the software deserves at least one round of beta.
long time ago, when the question of "when will the converter be available?" was discussed, the developers always said: "no later than rc1, but we are undecided if it will be available before that".
just imagine what a disaster it would have been if they were to wait with the converter until rc1. so far dozens, if not hundreds of bugs relating to the converter were reported and fixed. i think that the converter is ready now for rc, but i may be wrong here. i am absolutely sure that the converter that was introduce to the cvs sometime after beta-4 was NOT ready for rc.
the new style, ie prosilver, is different enough from anything that predated it, and has enough issues/bugs to justify at least one round of beta.
so far,
almost every beta cycle also introduce at least one new significant component:
- beta-1: olympus
- beta-2: utf-8
- beta-3: new (>32) custom bbcodes (true, this was not that significant)
- beta-4: software update infrastructure (hopefully can be expanded in the future to support MODs). unfortunately, i don't feel that this component received as much testing as it deserves, so it might not be as clean as it should.
- beta-5: phpbb2 -> phpbb3 converter. with it, first serious testing of large (=converted) boards begun, which, in turn, helped uncover issues in seemingly unrelated areas such as backup/restore.
- (future) beta-6?: prosilver?
and then, we will be ready for rc1.
just my 2c, of course.
