used in the way described, ie. with conjunction with a mailing list, in effect converts your forum (or part of it) to the archiver of the mailing list.

Where can I find it?
personally, i can see a problem with this way of use: while every message to the mailing list will be archived, the forum may contain some additional posts that were posted directly on the board. this way, the forum is almost, but not quite, the archive of the mailing list, which can be somewhat confusing.

Oh. I see. PHPBB doesn't have full moderation of messages. That would be essential for this. There is an Approve Post MOD in development, but that's it. We'll have to see how that develops.

You could just restrict posting to the particular forum that you use as your mail archive.

Surely just changing forum permissions to 'on moderation queue' is full moderation of posts?

I think the discussion was actually turning to 2.0. Which, admittedly, is off-topic here :)

i'm (almost) sure there are more than one, but you may want to try
http://mail2forum.com" target="_blank

in addition to the MOD, they also offer for download 2 pre-modded phpbb 2 packages: one with their mod, and one with their AND attachment mod (there is some heavy interaction when there are attachemnts on the mail messages).
it seems (i didnt go too deeply) that they also solved the problem i pointed to: this is a bi-directional thingy, such that posts to the board are sent to the mailing-list, and vice versa.

i have no idea if it's any good.

of course, this is a strictly phpbb-2 issue, so it is entirely inappropriate to discuss it here. i suggest to continue any further discussion on http://www.phpbb.com," target="_blank or http://mail2forum.com" target="_blank (surprize! they have a message board AND a mailing list on their site, and the two are connected! )

Digital graal cm2f - http://www.digitalgraal.net/" target="_blank was one of the phpbb2 options

I think the other was mail2forum

and yes it's the wrong place to discuss it

I am just looking at using phpBB and was wondering if anyone had any more experience they could share with using either of these phpBB mods for post by email. I am trying to setup a set of corporate forums which can be used for having technical discussions. I really like the use of the forum for recording the conversation trail, but I suspect I will never get people to change the mindset of having these conversations by email. Having forums that can be posted to by email will be perfect.

i tried to get an organization to use a phpBB forum for discussions, and they hated it. they are used to email discussions. they used a basic email discussion-list, with one big distribution list. every post got emailed to all members. problem was that a single distribution list was made to support multiple simultaneous discussions, so people got too much mail, and threads got lost in the mess.

i discovered mail-based discussion by jkn. they are no longer available, and i've been searching for a replacement. here's how their awesome interface looked:

http://tinyurl.com/b48lvn

the great things about jkn is that i could seed multiple discussions to the whole group, and then members could subscribe only to those discussions of interest to them. member would not receive follow-ups to threads they were not subscribed to. jkn created separate distribution lists on the fly, and kept threads isolated from each other. and my users avoided the email avalanche on topics they didnt care about. jkn would display the entire thread in the email, in compact form, so users never had to visit the web-interface-- they could do everything in email. this is just awesome for users who are email-centric.

and, if they wanted, they could visit the web interface to read thread they were not subscribed to.

mail2forum mod exists, but is not available yet for phpBB 3.x.

here are some other ones (not phpbb):
