It's always been said... even though phpBB may not, or does not have the most secure BB, or the most feature packed BB, or the most user friendly BB... (although all of those can be debated now with phpBB3) they have always had an excellent user base, community and support.

It's a pity, but I'm staying with Invision.

The phpbb2 is extremely outdated and lacking many features I do need. To make phpbb2 comparable with IPB I hade to install more than 30 modifications (and some of them badly conflicted at first). Yes, the phpbb has excellent community. But it will not replace stability and robustness of IPB, and the admin panel in phpbb2 is mess.

Yes, the phpbb3 is another story. It's cleverly thought up... but... well, it's a long story. Too long, if we speak about running forum. And it gets outdated now even being developed. IPB has released its IP.Board 2.2, vB is updating, too.

We have been waiting for phpbb3 for a year. And then, we have bought IPB for our community, and now staying with it. Manual updates are perpetual, and I'm sure I won't need any support from the team ever... that's why I don't even try to compare support options.

Sorry, but formerly a fan of PHPBB, I'm now out of it. It surely did took too long and it surely does not prove it well by now.

Farewell.

If you have found a solution that meets your requirements thats great news. If that happens to not be phpBB, that's OK. I mean at the end of the day these systems are just tools to aid communicate.

Personally I do not see the need to get offended/annoyed if someone chooses a system other than one I have choosen. We all have our own requirements. The phpBB developers choose what they would like to see in phpBB. Thats their right as they develop it. I am sure they are fully aware some people would like to see features they do not implement. However, since they make that conscious decision not to include said features, you can take it they are happy enough to let users choose the product that suits them, even if that is not phpBB.

So good luck with your community, whatever tool it uses.

I'm happy you found something that you like and works for you Alex,

I would echo what poyntesm said. If it suits you, hey, all power to ya.
If people feel they like SMF, IPB, vB or another forum software, then hey... that is alright, that fits there needs and that's fine.
I'm content with waiting for phpBB3, but I also know it's not for everyone.
And not everyone is willing to wait, or they may not be able to wait, but that is the way of the road with Open Source software, it's just not a big deal to some of us, and we've learned to accept it.

Yep. It isn't like we'll kill you if you use IPB instead of phpBB. Each of the three software has its own pros and cons, and every user has a different opinion about each of them.

exactly. but IMO it's a matter of which software your familiar with I 'grew up' with phpBB to put it bluntly. to me, the IPB and vB ACP's look cluttered and un-easy to use, but that's because I know phpBB from top to bottom and grew accustomed to it :)

As I help administer a vB forum (3.6), I can offer this comparison:
  • Permissions: phpBB3 beats vB by a long shot here. phpBB3 has many more permissions and the system of overrides for a user in multiple usergroups is much cleaner.
  • Forum management: Each is roughly equal here.
  • Interface: vB is getting more and more cluttered with each release. The default skin is pathetic, not by aesthetic reasons, but because it is so reliant on tables and it contains some wretched excesses.
  • Templating: phpBB3's template system is much better than vB's.
  • phpBB3 lacks a calendar, which vB offers. But I don't really care about that.
  • Moderation features: vB beats phpBB by a long shot here. vB offers quick moderation of multiple posts in a topic at the same time, without going through the moderator control panel or anything. It also offers soft-deletion of posts and a superior warning/infraction system. However, phpBB's post reporting system is superior.
vB does, of course, have many many more options than phpBB3. It is still more suitable for larger forums due to its advanced moderation features. phpBB could fix that easily in 3.2, just by adding in-topic moderation, soft deletion, and perhaps some additional features for large forums like memcached.
