[Building a large project around phpBB3

It's comforting to know that... since this is a phpBB message board, we will get completely 100% objective opinions by all folks visiting. People who love IPB, and vB visit and post in support of phpBB all the time... right? ;)

Well I do hope phpBB3 will be finished before my project.

Bald ?? Me ?? No way ...
I've got some nice long hair, if I were to become bald my wife would divorse from me ...
Before you guys start saying things, there are other reasons why she married me, not just the long hair ...

phpBB has nowhere near the amount of mods (nor the seamless integration of those mods) as forums such as IPB or vBulletin.

However, IPB costs $150 or $300 for 6 months of support/upgrades (and $25 or $50 to continue for 6 more months, respectively), and vBulletin costs $85 for a one year license (and after you "must" remove it... or else!) or $160 for a perpetual license (but after a year, to keep updated, you must pay $30 yearly).
That's a lot of money to pay.

Or, you could go with a less featured product like phpBB, but the (possibly huge) upside is that it is 100% free.

Comparison is inevitable, but I'd say that each one has its own benefits. IPB and vBulletin function better with mods (they're easier to install and are more seemless), but everything with them costs money - themes, updates, the software itself, mods, and support.
So it really comes down to how much you are willing to spend.

Of course, since many say you cannot compare free forum softwares to paid ones, it would probably be a better and more productive discussion to compare phpBB to the likes of MyBB, bbPress, IceBB, ikonboard, mercuryboard, MyTopix, Phorum, punBB, Quicksilver forums, and UseBB
Infact, there's a ton of free forums out there, just look at the DMOZ directory: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Programming/L ... ts/Forums/

Your project, or phpBB3? 8O

Sometimes I'm convinced phpbb3 will be out by 2008 hopefully.... kind of like those optimistic flying car schedules? :<

-- ja so --

icebb doesn't look bad, I'm surprised, the last time I visited them I was repulsed with horror.... :< They're a bit slow though, and speed matters to me.

-- -- --

as for that tuvai thing, that looks like hacked punbb to me with the default darker-with-yellow thing, and a couple php files hacked into the hooks. Dunno, could be completely different, but it reminds me alot of that.

"phpBB has nowhere near the amount of mods (nor the seamless integration of those mods) as forums such as IPB or vBulletin."

now where did you pull that out of? your a**? Since when! I've yet to see a real mod for ipb that doesn't add "LOL LOOK AT THIS SHOUTBOX". phpBB has tons of mods, thats where I'd put my vote for one of phpbb's strong points.... Sure, they're not really n00b friendly, but nothing free is, for these reasons:

1) Well, obviously, the person who wrote it knows how to install it, and they probably want to use it, thats probably their primary goal, and so if its not perfect, I suppose the other person doesn't really want it to badly

2) oh come on, if you think you're going to get paid service free, :< I've finally learned how to pwn everything in linux and have gotten alot better at php and actually understand what I'm doing now, and I can read most computer code (and french and spanish and some italian and german and a tiny bit of latin :D ) Yes, it did take work, but, now I can have uber forums and stuff.

If you really want to pay, then pay! I'm not stopping you! :)

titan is right here, pay if you want.. or just take some time to learn it yourself..

actually, I'm basing my occupation of phpBB. I never really had a ambition for any job so to say, and when I started modding phpBB I got interested in the WWW. that's why I'm coursing through a webmaster education.. it's strange how things change

Okay I tested vBulletin 3.6.4 and IBP 2.2. Both are awesome!

What I realize is that I never really appreciated the phpBB developers why they did not make Olympus full with many little features until I tested both of those softwares. vB and IPB are bloated scripts. There are little features in them that I wish I can just take them out. Those scripts are not necessarily needed for a board script. Such example is having a portal, a calendar, quick reply, reputation or karma, and more. Some features are there just make the forum board script bloated and slow. I did not like that.

Olympus has the core features to keep it nice and fast. This is better for modders to make mods in areas where there is a feature that users are seeking a demand for.

So I am appreciative of phpBB developers making Olympus simple yet filled with all ease on features.

Now I feel more faithful to phpBB.
hmm....

For what it's worth, here are some of my opinions, but first clear a few things out of the way:

I've seen MODX mentioned here as for info about MODX, we don't refer to that black website about a cms but to this: http://www.phpbb.com/mods/modx/index.php

As for my opinion.
I Started off using phpBB2 as I wanted to create a forum, and did not want to spend money.
I started learning my programming and html and everything related, modifying phpBB2.

I know exactly how to modify my phpBB2 to insert it into my site the way I need it to. Because of this I use phpBB2, because I'm very fimiliar with it, and if I were to use another softwareBB, I would have to relearn, which is also the case with phpBB3.
But I have been messing around with the latest B4 and it was quite easy for me to understand, as it also is a phpBB board.

So I use phpBB simply because I know how it works. And the fact it is free is also present.
It might not be the best board, but it has enough features and other things to suit my needs for a bulletin board.

Since people are mentioning their experiences with other boards, I thought I also would mention my horrible experience with Invision Power Board. You can read my long thread about it here...

http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=389426

By the way, it took that very public thread with 175 replies to finally get Invision to refund my money.
