There is a mailing list about phpBB releases, where you also hear about updates to 2.0.x. I'm sure that will also be used to anounce the release of 3.0. Have a look on the main site.

I have a coupla dozen mods myself, but I'll only need to modify a handful of the mods (3 or 4).
A lot of the mods were incorporated in one way or another into the features of Olympus.
