Safe to use

Post by NeoDigital »

Ok sorry is this has been asked before.

Just out of curiosity is it safe to use the Olympus CVS version on websites while it's still in design stage.

Every day i check out http://area51.phpbb.com/cvs" target="_blank for updates and any updates available im quick to update.

So generaly is it safe to let people come play i mean talk and so forth ?

BTW i can't wait for it to be released it's going to be pretty sweet it's looking really nice this far.

If there was a upgrade script then I'd be using the CVS on support forums for one of my sites. :)

You may the odd interesting bug in the bits the devs havent finished yet but its perfectly safe.

Unless you're really good at PHP and your database, it is not recommended to use Olympus just quite yet in a live environment. ;)

It wouldn't hurt to install a new version every few days to let people play around with it and test it out. It's also easier to find and report bugs that way if more people are testing it out. For instance, I only test out the Administrative and posting part, not the registered users (e.g. their restrictions, etc.). So it's a good thing to let people test it, but don't use it as your only forum. Have a stable 2.0 version for them to actually use. ;)

Why not just download the CVS copy for yourself then?? Its not really rocket science..??

Well I fit that criteria so thats no problem.
Less knowledge is required each day though. All you really need to know is very basic PHP to install it (e.g. remove the die). Not really any code edits you need to do to make it work.

Too lazy to make a converter which probally wont work later on and will definately be superseded by the official one. ;)

Aldenhier but you are testing the registered user functions.
Last time I checked you didnt have admin privelages on Area51.

I am a testing nut there is basically only 3 people who know about the forums and that is myself chris and steven ill get more people to join in and test things out.

Ive noticed some issues were MySQL has a hissy when i go to view a topic removed it and it was fine again. Also registration MySQL errors there also so i pretty much know what some things are that don't work.

Me when it comes to testing i like to really get dirty and play with alot of the settings and so forth so yea it's fun testing new software out.

I love testing, even tested a paper shredder if it really could only handle 5 pages. And yes it only could. Also found the problem with it they used plastic radars so i broke a few :P

So lets test this puppy to the limit
