Problems because of a router

Post by mikemm100 »

I tried to use cvs to down load the latest version of phpBB3. However my router is being retarded as usuale and will not allow me to connect to the server it just keeps blocking it. I wonder whether anyone could email me a the code in a bzip file or something because i have no other way of getting it. All help to get these files would be greatly appreciated, my email address is sheepcentral@gmail.com

Thanks in Advance,
Michael.

If you can't work it.
Don't use it.

It's that simple.

I can't help that my router is blocking almost everything apart from IM and web browsing.

Routers won't normally block outbound ports, unless you have asked them too. Read your routers manual and find out how to access its control panel (some have a http control page). Go into Firewall or something similar and see if that helps. Have you tried looking for a http version of CVS?

Important thing to remember is phpBB is hosted on Sourceforge.net, if you have a problem with accessing CVS go and ask the friendly guys at Sourceforge, If you have a problem with your CVS client consult the clients distributer, (or if its open source go through the source code and try to find whats broken). If its a problem with your operating system contact your operating systems vendor. If its a problem with your Firewall contact the company who make your firewall. If its a problem with your ISP contact your ISP. And if its your router contact your routers manufacturer, or your system administrator if that isn't you. (some router manufacturers offer a free helpline)

phpBB have suprisingly little to do with CVS, apart from all the stuff in it ofcourse. And if you have a problem getting CVS its proberly quite unlikely that it has anything to do with phpBB themselves.

Oh and for the person who said CVS intsructions where wrong on phpBB.com they are proberly outdated, I think sourceforge chnged there CVS recently, They are in the process of upgrading sourceforge (I get their newsletter every so often).

I had a problem getting the source, but I think the problem was the CVS cleint, it was the command line one, died witherrors about folder not existing so i gave up. You can always try a Linux LiveCD that has the proper CVS client on it, I think Knoppix has it.

Anyway this is proberly goig to be considered support, so will no doubt be looked, and float down the list of entries in the forum list and then in a couple of weeks someone will post the exact same question. hmm maybe some info about CVS should be pinned? something along the lines of "quit asking phpBB for help with CVS, contact sourceforge or your CVS client manufacturer"

If you get good with CVS it can be an extremely powerfull tool, I like cvs diff, then when someone makes a checkin you can see exactly what they did, (I used this at work often when things stopped working, so I could find out who checked a bad file in and fix it). If you want the offical CVS manual its at http://ximbiot.com/cvs/manual/" target="_blank (This is written for the command line version, read it, it list some very powerful things (most of which read only access prohibits but there are still useful things))

[EDIT]
OK here is sourceforge.net's own docs for you to read:
http://sourceforge.net/docman/index.php?group_id=1" target="_blank main documentation

http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_d ... group_id=1" target="_blank CVS documentation

http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_d ... connection" target="_blank Connecting to CVS

http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_d ... cvs_client" target="_blank Software an configuration for CVS

Forgot to mention if you go to the phpBB page on sourceforge ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpbb" target="_blank ) and click CVS it gives you the commands to connect
