URL question

Post by DragonlordP »

I was wondering: if I have a link to a post or a topic at my 2.0.14, will it still work after upgrading to Olympus? That is, will the url of a specific post be exactly the same as before? If not, will there be a redirect page or will they just become broken links? Thx

As far as I can tell they will be broken links, need to be re-done.

for most scenarios it should be pretty straight forward to automatically convert such URLs to the corresponding new equivalents, this isn't such a new situation: it's basically like having moved with your forum to a new domain or after moving the phpBB forum on the webserver, afterwards you'll also want to adjust the URLs accordingly by running a corresponding SQL query.

Um...

phpBB 2.0: viewtopic.php?p=1536639#1536639
phpBB 2.1: viewtopic.php?p=126#126

Looks compatible to me...

Jelly, are you sure about that?

Last time I checked which was right now I saw:
2.1: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19576&p=118082#118082

;)
Note: it also includes "?sid=" which is automatically removed from the URL in this post :!:

Quick test revealed:
2.0 viewtopic.php?p=6140#6140 SUCCEEDED
On 2.0.x, it is sufficient to only include the post ID.

2.1 viewtopic.php?p=118082#118082 FAILED
2.1 viewtopic.php?t=19576&p=118082#118082 SUCCEEDED
So, with normal topics and posts, it is necessary to include topic ID as well as the post ID.

However, with Global Announcements:
2.1 viewtopic.php?t=14970&p=93355#93355 FAILED
2.1 viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14970&p=93355#93355 SUCCEEDED
So, for Global Announcements, it is necessary to also include the forum - presumably, because they may be displayed in any forum, so without this specified, the script cannot generate the top navigation correctly.

If it doesn't change before final release (which it may), I suspect a mod that allowed you to just put the post ID would be fairly easy - it would have to make the assumption that if a post appeared in multiple forums, then the first one found (numerically) should be shown. But this is not for now... for all we know, this may already be in the works!

Would a developer be kind enough to tell me if the upgrade script will feature a redirection page or if I have to wait for a mod?

Works for me too now... I guess this is a salutary tale about testing things on a beta board - it might change over the weekend!
