Hi everyone,
first of all, I know, that phpbb 2.1 is not supported and I know that it's done when it's done.
Now to the question. At the moment we're using a wbb Board and have things like subforums and other things that are only supported without mods by 2.2.
Now the question is what version to convert this to.
There are some possibilities I see:
- We convert to a simple phpbb 2.0 and loose all extra information and have to restructure the board
- We convert to a complex phpbb 2.0 with mods and keep the informations, but may have problems with the update to 2.2 and may have a lot of work to do to convert our informations.
- We use the unstable, unsupported 2.1
I'm a php developer and I think I should be able to handle problems that may appear because of the unstable state of phpbb 2.1. But I'd like to hear some other oppinions.
In the next months the board will probably not be public and only be there to make some load and performance tests and find a good way to convert the forum structure. So that after this tests the real conversion can take place.
Changing from other board to phpbb, which version to use

Re: Changing from other board to phpbb, which version to use
Use phpBB 2.0.11 for now since that is the most stable version and then you can later upgrade to phpBB 2.2 really easy since an upgrade path will be provided.

yes -- phpBB 2.0.11 is best for stable applications now or, depending on your urgency, you could also wait for the beta to "experiment" where some help and support will be partly provided, but bear in mind that it will still be beta and maybe not too long away -- for the latest insider info look here:

thx, and merry christmas to you allcyberCrank wrote: Good Luck Butcher and Welcome to phpBB!
The problem I see with 2.0 ist that we'll loose some informations we currently have in the db. On a new board I would certainly start with a 2.0er version, but my problem is that I don't want to loose the extra informations we have at the moment. And changing the structure may be a problem too (we have a lot of subforums at the moment).
A solution could be to use some mods, which may keep the functionality and so be able to upgrade later to a 2.2. If I have read it right there will be an upgrade path for the attachment mod and the subforum mod, or am I wrong?

I'd suggest waiting to the final release of 2.2.0. Then you just have to to do all the convertion work once.
And about the upgrade path, that is up to the MOD authors, so you would have to ask them. But I recall seeing them both saying they will provide such somewhere, but I'm not sure.

As far as I know, Piithrik was intending to create a migration tool for the upgrade from his mods to phpBB 2.2, however he did tell me that he wasn't sure if he would have the time, nor when he would do it.Butcher wrote:f I have read it right there will be an upgrade path for the attachment mod and the subforum mod, or am I wrong?
If I were you, I would just wait until 2.2 is complete. However, 2.1.2 is stable enough, and I was stuck in the situation where I had to put it on a live board. It should be secure enough too, but if you choose that route, make sure you stay updated with the CVS, and the permissions system will need a little bit of manual work at the meoment.

Re: Changing from other board to phpbb, which version to use
if you're worried about losing information when converting to 2.0.11, just install your database with a different prefix, and manually move the information that's missed. i don't see a converter supporting wbb, however...althoughh you can check here, or contact the support team for 2.0.11: http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php#converters and http://www.phpbb.com/support/
NO PM or IM support offered!!
thank you!
